I discovered Ayisha Malik through the You’re Booked podcast with Daisy Buchanan.
Ayisha was so smart, funny, and interesting I immediately bought her book. Sofia Khan is Not Obliged is as smart, funny, and interesting as its author.
Sofia’s voice captured me from the opening paragraphs, she’s smart, witty, and so easy to like, even when she’s messing up. I was completely caught up in her world, her friends are great; kind caring and funny, and her family is warm, loving, and slightly bonkers.
There are plenty of laugh out loud moments in this book, but it also made me cry, and then laugh through my tears – always a winning combination. The romance is an utter delight, as are all Sofia’s flirty texts. This is more than just a romantic, funny story though. Ayisha Malik does a great job of portraying the ins and outs of family life and loving people who occasionally exasperate you. Sofia’s parents, are incredible funny and also just the best parents – I adored them!
Religion also features a lot in this book, it’s an important part of Sofia’s life. She talks about it the way she talks about everything else. So it just becomes another part of everything that makes her who she is. I really liked this aspect of the book, I’m not religious, but I could completely understand why her faith and wearing the hijab were important to Sofia.
All in all Sofia Khan is Not Obliged is the absolute perfect summer read. I can’t wait to read the sequel.
